You hope it won’t happen to you, but 1 in 5 women experience the loss of a child, also known as a miscarriage. This most commonly occurs between 4 and 8 weeks of pregnancy, but it is also possible to lose your child after a first good ultrasound.
You may already have some bleeding, or you may not notice anything at the moment, and/or have been told after the ultrasound that the baby is no longer alive. It is also possible that no baby was seen on the ultrasound, although it should have been visible by now. We will tell you what we see and what happens next. We are used to repeating the ultrasound if we are not entirely sure of what we see. Is the term correct or are you, for example, less pregnant? It may also be that we refer you to the gynecologist. It’s up to you to choose whether you want to go to ZGT or MST.
A miscarriage cannot be prevented. It is important to know that a miscarriage cannot be induced by yourself, for example by a lot of physical activity. Many women blame themselves, but this is not realistic. Support from your social environment can be very helpful in processing this loss. Because miscarriages are common, there is often someone in the environment who has gone through the same thing and can offer support.
We believe it is very important to support you as best we can with this loss. Everyone has different needs. We are used to asking you what you need and will call you after about 6-8 weeks to see how you are doing. It may be that the grief hits you later or that you find it difficult to give the child a place in your life. Know that you can always call us for a good conversation, further guidance, or a referral to another professional.
